The following exemplar PEPs have been developed by the Virtual School to support Designated Teachers, Social Care Colleagues and Carers.
Yusuf is a three-year-old currently attending preschool. Yusuf has been in the care of the Local Authority for just over two months, and he has settled in well in his foster home with Ken taking care of Yusuf. Yusuf is a gentle and curious child and loves to spend time observing others. He is making good progress and is well supported in preschool. Yusuf is beginning to recognise that other children can become his friends, and he has started to initiate interactions independently with a few children that he seems to like. Yusuf is interested by all things related to food and farming, and this is an excellent way of building relationships with him. He needs some additional encouragement to express his wishes and feelings as he seems anxious asking for support to have his needs met.

Suzie is a healthy and exuberant five-year-old currently in Reception year at a mainstream primary school. She has been in the care of the Local Authority for just over two years and has been living with her paternal great-aunt and uncle for the last year and a half. She is happy in her home and gets on well with another cousin that visits over the weekends. Suzie’s attendance at school is good and she talks fondly of the staff and her friends there. She is very creative and loves to build Lego, watch Bluey and read.

Ayan is an energetic and happy six-year-old boy that loves football. He currently attends a mainstream infant school and is preparing to move to a junior school at the end of the academic year. Ayan has been in the care of the Local Authority just over two years and has had three foster families in this time. He is now settled in a new home with David and Maria and permanency is being explored. Ayan is making progress at school and is particularly successful in mathematics and PE – often taking a leadership role in sports lessons.

James is a young person currently in Year 6 at a specialist school for his Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. He has been in the care of the Local Authority for two years now and has been living with his foster family for the last fourteen months and there are plans for permanency progressing. James is an engaging and intelligent young man that has a highly focussed area of interest in natural history. He thrives in science and history lessons and has a clear vision for his future to achieve a career at The Natural History Museum. James needs his supporting adults to plan a robust support offer to enable him to engage with wider curriculum subjects and continue to build his confidence and sense of felt safety.

Riley is a Year 8 pupil attending a mainstream secondary school. At the moment, he finds school difficult and can struggle to see the value of education, which has affected his attendance and led to several suspensions. Riley has been in care for almost four years and has experienced a number of changes in his living arrangements. He has recently moved into a residential children’s home, where trusted adults are working alongside him to help him feel safe, settled and able to engage more positively with school.

Oscar is a Year 10 student in a mainstream school. He enjoys school, has positives relationships with staff and peers, and is working towards his GCSEs. He benefits from additional support in English and Maths to help him make good progress. Oscar has been in care for almost two years and lives with his siblings in a stable foster placement. His attendance can sometimes be affected on Mondays and Fridays due to family contact arrangements, but with the support of school, his carers and his social worker, he is encouraged to attend regularly and achieve his full potential.
